Dr. Squatch Pine Tar soap bar with the words $6 soap and $1.5B exit

Dr. Squatch Breakdown: How do you put a $6 bar of soap on subscription?

Key takeaways

  • Dr. Squatch fixes the frequency at every 3 months and lets each subscriber choose how many bars come in the box.
  • A $6 bar of soap cannot carry a subscription on its own, so Dr. Squatch sells a $36 box.
  • Dr. Squatch shows discounts from 12% to 50% across its pages, and the fix is one savings number stated the same way everywhere.

How do you put a $6 bar of soap on subscription?
How do you put deodorant, shampoo, and face wash in the same one?
And does every product even need to be on it?

Dr. Squatch had 75,000 people on subscription by early 2022.
Three years later, Unilever paid a reported $1.5 billion for them.

Everything I have scored so far has been supplements. IM8, Mars Men, Grüns. One or two hero products at $50 to $100. Dr. Squatch starts at $6 and sells across ten categories.

What they got right

1. They fixed the frequency and let you choose the supply.

Everything ships every 3 months. What changes is how many bars come in the box.
Soap is personal. One person finishes a bar in two weeks, another takes two months. So they don’t ask how often. They ask how much.

2. They sell a box, not a bar.

A $6 item cannot carry a subscription on its own. A $36 box can.
Pick your scents, add deodorant, hair care or toothpaste, and edit it later. Even a single-bar product page pushes you into the box builder.
If you sell small-ticket products, copy this one.

3. Their subscribers actually use swap.

Every brand offers skip and swap. Very few get customers to use it.
On Reddit and Trustpilot, Dr. Squatch subscribers talk about swapping scents and adding new ones before the box ships. I rarely see that.
The fixed frequency is why. Everyone knows a box is coming every 3 months, so they get the reminder, open the dashboard and change it. The help centre even shows a screenshot of the dashboard, so you know what you can change before you log in.

Where they lose

4. The discount keeps changing.

Every product shows a different number. The face wash 3-pack saves 14%, the deodorant and soap set 12%, the deodorant 6-pack 17%.
Then the subscription page says 15%, the navigation says 25%, the banner says up to 30%, and the free gifts page says 50%.
Pick one number and say it the same way everywhere.

5. Points can’t pay for the subscription.

The rewards program is generous and public. 50 points is $5 off, up to $30.
Then the help centre says points can’t be used on subscription orders, the one thing you pay for every 3 months. Redeem points on the site and the sale price goes back to full price. One subscriber wrote that he “should be allowed to redeem them on the sale price.” Another lost 650 points to expiry and said he’d cancel over it.
We see this in client data too. People cancel the subscription to spend their points, then subscribe again.
Four boxes is a year of soap. By box eight, a subscriber has paid $400 to $500. A free bar at that point costs almost nothing.

6. The subscription barely shows up in the emails.

Their calendar is new scents and discounts, two or three drops a month. Their own subscription page lists early access to new products as a subscriber benefit. I could not find a single promotional email that says so.
There is no separate welcome for new subscribers either, and nothing ties the bar to a routine. Toothpaste gets morning and night. Soap gets nothing.

7. The box you edit is not always the box you get.

Cancelling is clean. Their own help article comes up first, the steps are numbered, and a reminder goes out 5 days before every charge.
The complaints are about stock. Limited scents sell out, and a different bar ships without anyone being asked. People edited the box and still got the wrong one.
If a scent is out, tell them and let them pick the next one.

Four things you can copy this week

  • Put a screenshot of your customer dashboard in the help centre.
  • State rewards in dollars. 50 points is $5 off.
  • Send a reminder 5 days before every charge.
  • Give subscribers early access to new launches, then tell them.
