Key takeaways
- Telling subscribers a free gift was coming in their next box lifted order 2 conversion by 85% over the group told nothing.
- The gift came with no discount and no price change, and its timing before order 2 mattered more than its value.
- Most brands save gifts for loyal customers, but an early gift at orders 2 and 3 builds the loyalty instead.
A supplement brand came to us with a familiar problem.
Order 2 conversion was bleeding.
Customers subscribed, received their first box, then cancelled before the second shipment hit.
They had tried email sequences.
Discount offers.
Nothing moved the number.
So we ran a different test.
The setup
We split customers with an upcoming order date within 5 days into two groups.
Group A: Standard experience. No change.
Group B: Notified that a free gift would be included in their next order.
No discount.
No price change.
Just the knowledge that something extra was coming.
The result
Group B converted 85% more than Group A.
Not 5%. Not 15%.
85%.
They didn’t skip.
They didn’t cancel.
They showed up for order 2.
Why this works, and why most brands do it backwards
Most brands give gifts to their best customers.
Loyalty milestones.
VIP rewards.
Order 10 gets a surprise.
The data says that is backwards.
Give the gift early, before loyalty is earned, and you create it.
Order 2 is where most subscription brands lose the relationship.
The novelty of order 1 has worn off.
The customer is quietly deciding if this is worth continuing.
That is exactly when the gift needs to show up.
Not forever. Just long enough for the product to prove itself.
Orders 2 and 3 are the bridge between a customer who tried you and a customer who trusts you. The gift buys you that bridge.
The customer who receives something unexpected before they have decided to stay is not the same customer who receives a reward after they have already proven loyalty.
One creates the behavior.
The other celebrates it.
What to test this week
- Pull your order 2 cohort.
- Find customers with an upcoming order in the next 5 to 7 days.
- Send one group a heads-up that something extra is in their next box.
The value of the gift matters less than the timing of it.
