Key takeaways
- Appstle's top listed plan covers up to $100K a month in subscription revenue, and Seal's Legend plan covers 500 subscriptions, per their App Store listings in November 2026.
- At 2,000 subscribers and a $50 order, Loop Starter costs about $1,099 a month against $100 on Appstle's top plan, so a move has to buy a lever worth more than the gap.
- When a supplement brand moved from Appstle to Loop in June 2026, the migration created 348 subscriptions and cancelled 232 the same day, so raw churn read 440 cancels against 208 real ones.
Appstle, Seal and the free Shopify Subscriptions app get most Shopify brands started. They are cheap, they bill, and they let subscribers skip and pause.
Then the program grows. You want each cancel reason sent to its own offer. You want Klaviyo to know who skipped. You want a dead card to pause the subscription instead of hiding as active. And the cheap app either can't do it, or caps the plan before you get there.
This is the move we see most at 100 to 2,000 subscribers. Here is how to tell you have outgrown your app, what moving up costs, which app takes which source, and what comes with you. Prices were checked on 3 November 2026. For the full four-app comparison, see our best Shopify subscription app guide.
Six signs you have outgrown your subscription app
Outgrowing an app is not about size alone. It is about a setting you need and can't make.

- You passed the plan cap. Appstle's top listed plan, Business Premium, covers up to $100K a month in subscription revenue. Seal's Legend plan covers 500 subscriptions, with bigger plans on request.
- Every cancel gets the same offer. You need "too much product" sent to a skip and "too expensive" sent to a cheaper plan, then a test of which offer holds. That is cancel flow routing.
- Klaviyo can't see skips or cancels. We found no subscription events from Shopify Subscriptions. Without them, the Klaviyo subscription automations that do the retention work can't run.
- You can't choose what happens after the last retry. A dead card should pause the subscription and ask for a new card. More in active vs passive churn.
- Subscribers can't swap products. Shopify Subscriptions reviewers on the App Store say switching products means cancel and resubscribe.
- You want bundles or a build-a-box. Shopify Subscriptions lists none. Appstle keeps Build-a-Box on its Business plan.
One sign is not on the list: a rival telling you to switch. Most of what we find in audits is setup, not the app. If the lever exists on your plan and is just off, set it up first.
What Appstle, Seal and Shopify Subscriptions cost
The three cheap apps charge no transaction fee. They price by size instead, and the cap on each plan is what pushes you up.

| App | Plans, checked 3 November 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | Free. Pause, skip and cancel. No cancel flow or bundles listed. 3.8 stars from 887 reviews | App Store |
| Appstle | Free to $500 a month in subscription revenue. Starter $10 for small stores. Business $30 to $15K, with retention tools and Build-a-Box. Business Premium $100 to $100K. No transaction fee | App Store |
| Seal | Free to 50 subscriptions. Supersale $5.95 to 100, passwordless portal. Rising Star $9.95 to 250, custom cancel flow. Legend $24.95 to 500, bigger plans on request. No transaction fee | App Store |
What moving up costs each month
Here is the monthly bill at three sizes, at a $50 average order and one order per subscriber a month. Appstle and Seal are on the plan that includes a cancel flow. The four paid apps are on their cheaper list plan.

| Monthly cost | 100 subscribers | 500 subscribers | 2,000 subscribers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Seal | $9.95 | $24.95 | Not listed |
| Appstle | $30 | $100 | $100, at the cap |
| Loop Starter | $149 | $349 | $1,099 |
| Recharge Starter | $244 | $624 | $2,049 |
| Stay AI, annual | $368 | $644 | $1,679 |
| Skio Scale, annual | $582 | $912 | $2,149 |
At 2,000 subscribers, Loop Starter costs about $1,000 a month more than Appstle's top plan. That is 20 saved $50 orders a month. If 1 in 10 subscribers clicks cancel each month, that is 200 people, and lifting the save rate from 1 in 6 to 1 in 4 saves about 17 more. Add the subscribers who stay for more than one extra order, and a routed flow usually covers the gap. A move for a feeling does not.
Below about 100 subscribers, stay. Call the people who cancel. Our free app break-even in the app comparison puts the paid app ahead somewhere between 85 and 300 subscribers, depending on your save rate.
Where to move: which app takes which source
Every paid app says it migrates from anywhere. Here is what each one's own docs name.

- Loop names Seal in its migration process doc, runs the move free on every paid plan, and quotes about 2 weeks. We moved a client from Appstle to Loop in June 2026.
- Recharge names Appstle, Seal, Smartrr and Shopify's native subscriptions in its guide for moving from other Shopify apps. Managed migration sits on its higher plans, not on Starter.
- Skio moves Shopify-based subscriptions with a Launch Engineer, 4 to 5 weeks in all. It flags Smartrr, prepaid and bundles as cases that need extra checks.
- Stay AI lists no implementation charge and up to 2 weeks, but has no public migration doc. Get the plan in writing.
Moving up is the moment to set the program up right, not to copy the old one across. The Subscription LTV Maximizer™ builds your new setup or migration in 30 days, for $5,000.
Pick the next app by the lever you need

Loop Starter, $99 a month plus 1%
The usual next step at 100 to 2,000 subscribers. Routed cancel flows, bundles and Klaviyo events on the first paid plan, no per-order fee, and a free migration. A/B tests of save offers and a backup card sit on Pro. Setup notes are in our Loop retention setup.
Recharge Starter, $149 a month plus 1.50% and 20 cents
The biggest set of integrations, and the app most agencies and tools build for first. Bundles and managed migration sit on Scale at $499. See Recharge retention setup, and Loop vs Recharge for the two side by side.
Skio or Stay AI, past about $1M a year
Skio for Build-a-Box on its one self-serve plan and a Launch Engineer on the move. Stay AI for AI-picked offers at $299 a month on an annual contract. Both cost more than Loop Starter at every size we model. Recharge now owns Skio: what that means is in Recharge vs Skio in 2026. Setup notes: Skio and Stay AI.
What comes with you, and what doesn't
A supplement brand we moved from Appstle to Loop went live on 29 June 2026. Here is what the move carried, and what it left behind.

- 256 active subscriptions came across, matching Loop's dashboard. So did next charge dates and saved cards.
- Old prices came across too. Many subscribers still pay the legacy $44 price, so check your margin before you plan any price change.
- Every order before 29 June stayed in Appstle. Loop's own FAQ says history and analytics do not migrate. Export what you report on before you uninstall.
- Loop's migration created 348 subscriptions and cancelled 232 the same day, tagged "migrated from appstle". Raw data read 440 cancels in three months. The real number was 208.
- 9 subscriptions were paused by the move and never billed again.
- Loop's payment emails stopped in September: 184 retries that month with no email, and no Klaviyo flow covering failed payments.
None of that is unusual. It is why we run every move with our subscription app migration checklist and rebuild the flows with the Klaviyo event map.
FAQ
When should I switch from Appstle?
When you need a lever your plan can't set, such as a cancel flow routed by reason with tests, Klaviyo events for skips and cancels, or control over the last failed retry. Or when you pass Appstle's top listed plan, which covers up to $100K a month in subscription revenue.
Is Appstle cheaper than Recharge?
Yes. Appstle's plans run from free to $100 a month with no transaction fee. Recharge Starter is $149 a month plus 1.50% and 20 cents per order, about $624 a month at 500 subscribers and a $50 order.
Can I migrate from Seal to Loop?
Yes. Loop names Seal in its migration process doc, runs the move free on paid plans, and quotes about 2 weeks.
Is the free Shopify Subscriptions app enough?
Under about 100 subscribers, yes. It bills and lets subscribers pause and skip, but it has no cancel flow, no bundles, and we found no subscription events for Klaviyo.
Do I lose my order history when I switch?
Usually yes. Loop says history and analytics do not migrate. When our client moved from Appstle to Loop, everything before the go-live date stayed in Appstle.
Will subscribers need to re-enter their cards?
Not usually, if the cards sit in Shopify's vault and you stay on the same store. Cards at Stripe, Braintree, Authorize.net or PayPal need keys and an import, and Shop Pay cards can't move between stores.
